The last few months has been an immersion in a surfer's world. This is a surfer's journey back into the ocean, healing and strengthening from longtime injuries. I've followed him on surf checks, listening to his stories about shark medicine, whale encounters, and his time on the water, learning about swells, lefts, and winds, and watching him be with the ocean he loves.

The weather has steadily been warming, and some time back we started going on surf checks and I started making videos with my iPhone and Osmo Mobile 3. I’ve been having soooo much fun with this gimbal and now I’ve maxed out my iPhone storage, with still lots of footage to edit. Lesson – shoot then edit, one film at a time! I’m now posting them on the Sandra the Traveller Youtube channel too. Check out the videos and subscribe! Be sure to adjust your settings to the best video quality. I found out the default is a pretty dismal resolution.

We have gone on way more surf checks and he returned to the ocean on one of these field trips. He’s still strengthening his legs after an old injury. Between that, the rough waters and the cold Northern California weather, he hasn’t been surfing. After he went in that first day, of course he’s wondering why. He loves being in the water, and surfing. What he really wants is warm weather and warm waters.

Aside from these really short practice films, I’m working on a longer one about his return to the ocean. It’s such a different way of telling a story than with words and photos. So you’ll see some changes, more multimedia and experimentation on this website. Fun!
